Mount Fitz Roy is one of the most iconic images of Patagonia and the best way to see it, is via the Sendero Fitz Roy trail. Here you will reach the foot of Mountz Fitz Roy with the spectacular blue Laguna de Los Tres shimmering in front of it. This was one of our favourite hikes ever and truly an unforgettable experience.

Where is Laguna de Los Tres Located

Laguna de Los Tres is located at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy near the town of El Chaltén in the Argentine Patagonia region.

Laguna Del Los Tres Trail Summary

Distance: 22km
Time needed: 8 hours
Difficulty: Strenuous
Route type: Out and back
Elevation gain: 1,068m

How to get there

The Trail starts from the northern end of town at the end of Avenida San Martin (see map above) where there is a carpark and trailhead. Once you reach the trailhead follow the “Sendero Fitz Roy” signs.

When is the best time to visit

The trail is open all year round but the best time to visit depends on your preferences for weather and crowds.
Summer (December–February): The peak tourist season, with pleasant temperatures with Laguna de Los Tres fully melted and shimmering blue. It can be incredibly crowded at this time.
Spring and autumn: Milder weather with less crowds but Laguna de Los Tres may be frozen over or partially frozen.
Low season (May–August): Cold temperatures, but fewer crowds. Trail can be inaccessible due to snow

Our Verdict: Summer is the best time to visit for the amazing view of the lake with no ice.

TRAVEL TIP: Leave early to avoid the crowds! We would recommend leaving El Chaltén at 6 or 7am.

What to pack

The weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable and can turn in an instant, so bring clothes for all weather conditions even if the weather prediction is fine.

  • Warm clothes
  • Rain Jacket
  • Hiking Boots
  • Water
  • Food and Snacks
  • Sunscreen

Our Experience

The Trail starts out with a tough 3km of climbing as you make your way out of the valley carved out by Rio del Los Vueltas where you will pass an amazing viewpoint overlooking the river.

The next 6km is fairly easy and flat where you will have Mount Fitz Roy in front of you guiding you along with beautiful scenery all around.

At around the 9km mark you will pass through the campground and reach the base of the last 2 km to Laguna de Los Tres and the base of Mount Fitz Roy. This last section is very steep and strenuous(and there are plenty of signs to warn you!). Take your time and take plenty of rests on the way up not forgetting to look back at the stunning views behind you!

TRAVEL TIP: There is a fork in the trail after about 1km. Take the trail towards the Mirador Fitz Roy for an amazing viewpoint.

You will eventually reach the top and all your hard work will be rewarded with one of the most stunning views on the planet! The stunning blue laguna de Los Tres sitting in front of the towering granite peaks of Mount Fitz Roy that reflect in the shimmering water.

Also make sure before you leave to climb up the viewpoint to the left for stunning views of Laguna Sucia and Laguna de Los Tres at the same time!
